Drum Humidifiers

Drum humidifiers have a rotating cylindrical drum that passes through a pan of water. The drum is covered with an absorbent material that picks up the moisture, and moistens the air from the furnace as it passes through.

Some of the advantages of drum humidifiers include: Drum humidifiers are easy to install and are relatively inexpensive. Where water bills are high, drum humidifiers are quite economical to operate as they don't waste any water.

Although drum humidifiers are the most common type found on forced air furnaces, there are some distinct disadvantages, including:

Drum humidifiers require frequent cleaning. Mineral deposits quickly build up on the drum reducing the amount of moisture they add to the air, and eventually stalling the motor that rotates the drum. Your health could be an issue with drum humidifiers. The water standing in the pan can promote bacterial growth which is then circulated throughout your house.

Flow Through or Panel type Humidifiers

Flow through humidifiers take a portion of the air coming into your furnace and reroute it through the humidifier. In the humidifier it passes across a wet pad and then flows back to the furnace and into your home.

Some of the advantages of flow through humidifiers include: Flow through humidifiers are almost as easy to install as drum humidifiers and are similarly priced. Very little maintenance is require with flow through humidifiers.

Flow through humidifiers are becoming increasingly popular but do have some disadvantages, including: Flow through humidifiers can only deliver humidity when the furnace is running. This means that during the seasons requiring little heating, there may be very little moisture being added to you air. Very little of the water used by a flow through humidifier is actually converted to humidity. Most of the water is used to flush the humidifying pad and then passes to the drain
